Static QR Code: Permanent but Non-trackable

We all know what is a QR Code. But there are two types – Static and Dynamic. This post will focus only on the static QR Code type.

What is a Static QR Code?

If the code itself stores your target content, then this is a static QR Code. The content could be a serial code, text message, URL, Wifi password, or contact details.

This is just like a barcode – permanent. Once you generate the code, the content becomes unchangeable.

Unlike a dynamic QR Code, a static code is an independent entity. It is not tied to any service. The disadvantage of this is that static QR Codes are non-trackable. Except if the QR Code contains a URL which you can track using Google analytics.

Another disadvantage is that the more data you add, the denser the QR Code will become. This can make the QR Code difficult to scan with an average mobile phone camera.

This is a static business card QR Code with contact details such as:

  • Name
  • Title
  • Phone number
  • Fax
  • Email
  • Company name
  • Website
  • Address


A static QR Code can store the following content:

  1. URL: Leads the user to a web page
  2. Text: Display simple text such as message, promo code, or serial code
  3. Contact Details: Displays contact information and allows users to save you as a contact
  4. Wifi Credentials: Android devices can access Wifi network. iOS devices can view Wifi network name and password
  5. Maps location: Shows location on Google Maps
  6. Calendar Event: Prompts user to save an event (with details) to their phone calendar
  7. Phone number: Prompts user to dial the number
  8. Email Address: Open mail application with your email in the recipient field
  9. Text Message: A pre-loaded message opens in your messaging app. It also has your number
  10. Bitcoin Address: Displays your Bitcoin wallet address
  11. PayPal Payment: Redirects to a PayPal page that prompts the user to send you a payment

Note that the following QR Code types can only be dynamic:

  1. App Store QR Code: Single QR Code for all app store links (iPhone, iPad, Android, etc.) of a mobile app
  2. Social Media QR Code: Single QR Code leading to a page with links to all your social media pages
  3. Dynamic Business Card QR Code: QR Code leading to a personal web page with all your contact details
  4. Coupon QR Code: QR Code leading to a customizable coupon for your brand promotions

3. For simplicity, let us choose Read Text or Promo Code. Enter the details in the page that loads and click on Create my QR Code.

4. Once you generate your QR Code, you will have three design options to choose from:

  • Standard black-and-white
  • Fancy with custom logo
  • Fancy with custom background

6. Note that you will need to sign up for a free trial account to download your QR Code. An account is useful to save your QR Code design. Even if your free trial account expires, your static QR Codes will remain functional. These codes are not tied to the service in any way.

All in all, static QR Codes are useful in case you want to put them on ID cards or products for inventory management. For marketers using QR Codes in promotional campaigns, dynamic Codes are much more flexible.
