Founded in 1898, the Alameda Park Zoo in New Mexico, United States hasn’t seen any major changes in the past century. This is set to change now, thanks to a few middle school students.
Named Holloman 49ers, the group of nine teenagers is set to introduce QR Codes to the Alameda Park Zoo. The initiative was a part of the 2016-2017 LEGO League competition in Alamogordo, United States.

The LEGO League organizes competitions for elementary and middle school students. The league encourages students to focus and research on scientific and real-world challenges.

Alamogordo’s LEGO League challenged teams to come up with projects that benefit animals.
What will the QR Codes do?
The Holloman 49ers, the student group from Holloman Middle School, decided to do something for the Alameda Park Zoo. The team plans to introduce QR Codes outside every exhibit. Scanning the QR Code will direct visitors to a page with information about the animal.

“Almost everybody in town visits the zoo so we thought we could help the zoo. The bald eagle was removed from the endangered species list in 2007, so we wanted to make sure that was fixed.” – Alex Bills, Member of Holloman 49er
The Alameda Park Zoo embraced the idea of QR Codes. The zoo plans to install QR Codes outside all their exhibits by the end of 2016-2017 school year.

Nicole adds,
“This idea is not only cost-effective but it makes us more relevant as a zoo. By utilizing a piece of technology that most of our guests already carry around with them, we have a new opportunity to appeal to the community and to make learning more engaging. I am confident this will be a successful addition to our zoo.”
