To make learning easier and better for students, textbooks in Kerala (India) will now have QR Codes.
A QR Code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information such as text.
Students can use their smartphones to scan the QR Code and download the study material digitally.
An officer from the State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT) said:
“All the students of class IX and X will be benefited by this system. Since the curriculum has been revised, the QR Codes are need of the hour in textbooks.”
What will these QR Codes do?
There are many ways in which QR Codes can be used in books. They can take students to watch a video tutorial for the concept.
Or they can redirect to image gallery having all the pictures that couldn’t be added to the limited printing space in the book.
There a lot of ways QR Codes in books can help students.
Kerala SCERT will add QR Codes to textbooks of class IX and X. And will later implement the same for other classes as well.
K Jayakumar, a school teacher said:
“QR Codes can be linked to engaging videos and interactive content to better equip teachers. And provide students with the same content. Students will be able to use the information from home as well.”
To scan the QR Code, both students and teachers will have to install an app.
Kerala SCERT will add QR Codes to textbooks from the upcoming academic year.

How to read the QR code in the text books? Any relevant app for the purpose?
First, try scanning the QR Code with your phone’s native camera application. Open it and hold it in front of the QR Code for 2-3 seconds. If you get a pop-up showing some text, your QR Code has been scanned.
