If you are a frequent traveler, you must be aware of how long the queues at customs clearance are. It feels like forever before the entry permit gets stamped on your passport.
To put an end to these woes, the Shanghai port has adopted a QR Code Visa system since January 2016.
The project involves a new 144-hour visa-free transit QR Code sticker. These QR Codes encode the passenger’s detailed ID. The sticker is then placed on the passenger’s passport. Port authorities can scan the QR Code to access passenger’s information. Moreover, the design of these QR Codes is such that they are difficult to forge.
The QR Codes also help passengers make hotel bookings.

Since January 2016, an estimated 25,000 travelers entered Shanghai through various ports.
After Shanghai, Nanjing, Jiangsu, Hangzhou, and Zhejiang airports will follow suit.
