The Giving Bag AR Experience
IKEA – “The Giving Bag” AR Tour

Campaign Objective
To generate excitement for IKEA’s U.S. expansion by merging the physical and digital – using a massive pop-up icon (the Frakta bag) and AR to surprise and reward shoppers.
Campaign Story
IKEA created “The Giving Bag” tour – a colossal replica of its blue shopping bag placed in high-traffic spots (NYC, Chicago, Houston). The sculpture was studded with QR codes. When visitors scanned a code, their phone launched an augmented reality sequence showing IKEA furniture flying magically out of the bag, after which they were guided to a landing page with an exclusive discount or offer. The story tapped into AR tech to emphasize IKEA’s message of endless possibilities fitting into one bag.
Execution
Built a 19-foot 3D Frakta bag sculpture and toured it across multiple cities
Embedded QR codes on the installation inviting onlookers to scan
Upon scan, an AR animation played on the user’s device, overlaying IKEA products spilling from the giant bag
The AR experience concluded by presenting the user with a special promotional offer or coupon to use at IKEA
The bag tour coincided with IKEA’s announcement of new U.S. stores, blending spectacle with a call-to-action.
